Quiet On The Home Front

I've been a little quiet on the blog here. And what is even more weird, it has been a little quieter than normal at our house lately!

This past Saturday a storm rolled in and after a few delays, we got final word that all football games were cancelled. Which turned into a totally relaxing day at home! I cleaned, napped and read almost an entire book. It was a lovely change of pace.

Then Monday, Zane stayed home from school not feeling well which meant no practice that night - so another unexpected night at home together as a family!

And today, Zane is home again, with a fever. Not sure what is going on, but he definitely is not feeling well.

All that to say - there is not much to report on!

Our Weekend

We are in the full swing of fall and all that it brings: school, homework, sports, church activities, chiefs football, baking... and sometimes it can be hard to fit it all in!

This past weekend we did a pretty good job at attempting it though (ha!)... here's a little peak into our weekend:

Jaxen had a church event Friday night so Zane and I baked some delicious pumpkin-oatmeal-maple-glazed cookies. We both thought they were pretty good! I think Zane ended up eating 5 on Friday night by the time I realized it and I'm pretty sure he has been sneaking them out of the fridge all weekend - haha!

Saturday we had 2 football games and by the time we drive there early (for practice) stay for the full game and then drive back home I think I spent 6 hours for each of my boys to play in one game. Crazy, right?! Why do we do this? Oh yea - because I love my boys.... and it's pretty fun!

Zane's team lost (1-2)- but he had some pretty good plays. He is on the far left of the pic below (he just pulled the QB's flag). It was great - the other team did not even have a chance to get setup!

Jaxen's team won again (2-0) by 20 points. I did manage to get this cute pic before the game - but that's it! It's really hard to get Jaxen on camera... he is not a starter so he does not get as much playing time and when he is on the field everything happens so fast (and it's hard to find him!). But he had a great time was pumped about their win!

Saturday night Nik and I went out to dinner together - just the two of us! And then we did what parents do when we are not with our kids... buy our kids something - haha! Actually, I guess it was only socks for Jaxen and when Zane heard he was bummed we did not get him anything. He then informed me he needed new underwear. Do we spoil our kids or what?! We also bought coffee beans and kitchen sponges. This is what a date night looks like when you are 40+. But it was so nice to have that time with Nik. He's pretty great!

Sunday we went to church, Nik and I both were involved in Sunday School (I teach 1-2nd graders, Nik is a helper in 5-6th grade). After church, we ate pizza and watched the Chiefs pull off a win! I'm pretty sure a short nap happened, cleaning up of the kitchen, homework and a few more chores.

Sunday night I was in the kitchen again making pumpkin whoopie pies (Nik's request). I normally only make 1 batch a season, but I think I'll be in the kitchen this coming weekend making 1 more batch so I can share with my co-workers.

It was a pretty full weekend. But the best part? Nik's parents were here to enjoy the crazy with us. Our kids love having family around and it's so nice when they get to be part of our world.

Game Day!

Both boys had their first football games of the season this past weekend!

Look how cute my boys are 💗 (after looking at my pics, I realized I should have made Nik join us!)

They had so much FUN playing!

Jaxen's team (Bulldogs) are 1-0. Jaxen even got a sack on the QB in his first game!

Zane's team (Devils) are 1-1 (they played Sat and Sun).

Zane threw a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown and got a flag pull!

NASCAR

Guess who is in town? Kay and Russell

Guess why? NASCAR

Russell has always enjoyed NASCAR, but has never had the opportunity to attend a race in person... until now! Nik got his hands on some tickets and took his dad this past Sunday - so cool, right?

I'm so glad they got the chance to do this!

3 Things: Jaxen

Here are 3 Jaxen updates for you:

1. Remember when I told you that Jaxen joined the Orchestra and decided to play cello? Or maybe you don't (who knows if I blogged about it!). Anyways - I was so excited for him! And guess what... a year later, he decided he is no longer interested. I kind of saw it coming... but let it play out anyway (secretly hoping he would change his mind). It's official. He has dropped the class. And that's ok. By next year, he would have had to choose between orchestra and choir anyway. So, good-bye cello.

2. So far middle school has been really good. I mean - we are a month in, what could go wrong now?! Haha! When I asked Jaxen what he loved about middle school that was different than elementary school he said (1)lunches are way better (2) more freedom and (3) it's nice to switch teachers.

Apparently you get a bit more food at lunch, it does not taste like cardboard, and you get pizza from a local place every Thursday.

The "freedom" thing is new to us both. I am trying to find the balance of giving him a bit more freedom, but yet making sure he is responsible with that given freedom. Trying to teach but not micro-manage. Trying to let him make choices and watch the good/bad consequences unfold. Parenting is hard, y’all!

Jaxen really enjoys having multiple teachers. In his words (from last year) “that way if you don’t like a teacher you only have them for one hour instead of all day, every day.” True.

3. Jaxen received his football jersey at practice this week. Finally! They had to "earn" it. He was pumped - everyone was! And he loves his number, #12 (his bday and birth year).

He has been playing on the D-line and as a linebacker. Can’t wait for his first game on Saturday!

Funnies

Nik and I screen shot any "funnies" that we see and share them with each other -

I thought I would pass a few along to you to enjoy as well!
